Quick Tip 5: More lighting

Updated: Aug 28, 2018

- This series of posts aims to help small business owners take better photos, themselves -

In these quick posts I share some photo tips and the reality behind some of my photos - to show you how taking great photos is not about fancy studios, the best cameras or incredible talent. It's a lot about knowing how light works & understanding the magic.

Moody or bright? The shot on the left I used a reflector to cast some light onto the plate in the foreground and to brighten the shadow. On the right, no reflector was used. It's incredible what a difference it makes.

Here you can see how I set up the lighting. No professional lights were used to create these images - only natural light from my windows.

Natural lighting photography tips

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's important to think carefully whether you need drama in your images or not. Product photography is all about showcasing your product in a clear and positive light. Moody images are best used sparingly. Think carefully whether the more dramatic lighting would suit your branding or not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
